Fantasy football stock watch: Week 1

Let me start by saying I am not a fantasy football expert. But I am a very passionate and well-informed fan who has been playing fantasy sports for 12 years. On average, I play in six football leagues a year and finish in the money (top three) in about half of them. I have watched, read reports and/or analyzed the box score of every single week-one game and have identified a single player per team whose season-long fantasy stock has either gone up or down, and the reason for the change. It’s only one week, so the sample size is small, but considering it is the first real action of the season, the many statistics could be the start of a season-long trend.

Arizona Cardinals: John Brown, Wide Receiver
DOWN: Coming off his sophomore season with over 1,000 yards and in a prolific offense, many predicted Brown to be a weekly star in the fantasy world. But with Larry Fitzgerald and Michael Floyd starting over him, Brown was limited to eight yards on just one catch.

Atlanta Falcons: Devonta Freeman, Running Back
DOWN: Freeman was the top scorer at his position out of nowhere last season after rookie starter Tevin Coleman got hurt. Now that Coleman is healthy and more experienced, they are splitting the snaps evenly, crushing the value of a player who was frequently drafted in the second round this season.

Baltimore Ravens: Mike Wallace, Wide Receiver
UP: Playing with his first competent quarterback since leaving Pittsburgh a few years ago, Wallace appeared rejuvenated, putting up 91 yards and a touchdown to lead his new team in receiving.

Buffalo Bills: Tyrod Taylor, Quarterback
DOWN: Taylor was rewarded with a massive contract this past offseason for his performance last season, but imploded versus a mediocre Baltimore defense week one.

Carolina Panthers: Kelvin Benjamin, Wide Receiver
UP: After missing all of last season with an ACL tear, Benjamin has returned as the team’s go to pass catcher.

Chicago Bears: Jeremy Langford, Running Back
UP: While his numbers weren’t outstanding in the first game, Langford dispelled any concern of a timeshare between him and the rest of the Bears rushers.

Cincinnati Bengals: AJ Green, Wide Receiver
UP: While already a known elite player, Green torched the supposed top cornerback in the NFL, Darelle Revis, and no longer had Mohammed Sanu and Marvin Jones competing with him for targets.

Cleveland Browns: Robert Griffin III, Quarterback
DOWN: The dream for the career revival for RG3 in Cleveland appears over at least for 2016, as he broke a bone in his shoulder and is out at least eight weeks. Also, he was absolutely horrible.

Dallas Cowboys: Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver
DOWN: As long as rookie quarterback Dak Prescott has to fill in for Tony Romo, the chances look slim that Bryant will put up the numbers we have grown to expect from him.

Denver Broncos: C.J. Anderson, Running Back
UP: Anderson is one of the only true three down players at his position and if he finally stays healthy, he could be a top five RB.

Detroit Lions: Matthew Stafford, Quarterback
UP: Stafford looked very comfortable throughout his debut in the Lions new no-huddle offense, and has been excellent since Offensive Coordinator Jim Bob Cooter was promoted in the middle of last season.

Green Bay Packers: Jordy Nelson, Wide Receiver
UP: Another player who missed all of 2015 with an ACL injury, Nelson is healthy and back to being Aaron Rodgers favorite target.

Houston Texans: Will Fuller, Wide Receiver
UP: While it was Fuller’s first game ever, he looks locked in as the team’s second WR after debuting with 107 yards and a touchdown.

Indianapolis Colts: Andrew Luck, Quarterback
UP: Luck had an injury plagued 2015, but is definitely back to his old self after a monster week one against Detroit.

Jacksonville Jaguars: T.J. Yeldon, Running Back
DOWN: With Chris Ivory hospitalized, Yeldon had the opportunity to take the starting gig for himself on Sunday, but instead fell flat with only 39 yards on 21 carries.

Kansas City Chiefs: Spencer Ware, Running Back
UP: Until Jamaal Charles is healthy, Ware is a must-start, regardless of league format.

Miami Dolphins: Arian Foster, Running Back
UP: Yet another player who was hurt most of last season, Foster is the clear starter and played decently against a very stout Seattle defense.

Minnesota Vikings: Stefon Diggs, Wide Receiver
UP: Despite concerns over who will be throwing to him, Diggs had a solid opener as the Vikings best receiver.

New England Patriots: Chris Hogan, Wide Receiver
UP: Hogan launched his Patriots career with a touchdown, and could be even better when Tom Brady returns for week five.

New Orleans Saints: Coby Fleener, Tight End
DOWN: Many experts predicted a big season for Fleener now that he is the starter for the Saints, but he was nearly invisible in a game in which both teams combined for 993 yards of total offense.

New York Giants: Victor Cruz, Wide Receiver
UP: Cruz scored a touchdown in his first game since tearing his patellar tendon in 2014 and has a chance to continue his success as Eli Manning’s second or third option.

New York Jets: Matt Forte, Running Back
UP: One of the oldest in the league at his position, Forte dominated the field for his new team and shows no sign of slowing down.

Oakland Raiders: Amari Cooper, Wide Receiver
UP: Cooper was very good during his rookie season in 2015, but, if week one was any indication, he is on the verge of being one of the NFL’s best.

Philadelphia Eagles: Carson Wentz, Quarterback
UP: No matter how bad the Browns are, Wentz started his career superbly against them. If he continues playing at this level, he will quickly enter the top 12 of fantasy Qbs.

Pittsburgh Steelers: Eli Rogers, Wide Receiver
UP: Rogers was signed as an undrafted free agent after the draft and followed up a surprising preseason with 59 yards and a touchdown.

San Diego Chargers: Keenan Allen, Wide Receiver
DOWN: Allen, who suffered a lacerated kidney last season, tore his ACL in the second quarter against the Chiefs and will miss the rest of 2016.

San Francisco 49ers: Carlos Hyde, Running Back
UP: Continuing the trend of formerly hurt players breaking out, Hyde ran for 88 yards and two scores.

Seattle Seahawks: Russell Wilson, Quarterback
DOWN: Wilson completed 2015 as the third highest scoring QB but was uncharacteristically bad versus Miami and sprained his ankle, leaving his status for upcoming games unknown.

St. Louis Rams: Every Offensive Player
DOWN: The Rams were so bad, I can’t choose just one player. They punted 10 times and didn’t score a point. As long as Case Keenum is the starting QB, significant improvement is unlikely.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Jameis Winston, Quarterback
UP: The former Heisman Trophy winner and number one NFL draft pick, Winston had one of his best games as a pro, throwing for 281 yards and four touchdowns.

Tennessee Titans: Tajae Sharpe, Wide Receiver
UP: Like Eli Rogers, Sharpe broke out in the preseason, but is unquestionably the top pass catcher for his team and led them in in both yards and catches week one.

Washington Redskins: Kirk Cousins, Quarterback
DOWN: Many pundits were skeptical of his success last season, and after struggling against the Steelers, their prediction looks correct.
