iPhone 6 Plus: Phone or phablet?

Running late for class, you quickly grab your iPhone 6 Plus off of its charger and frantically try to put it into your pants pocket as you run out the door. You continue to stuff the large phone into your pocket when suddenly you hear the tearing of fabric as your worst nightmare comes to light; your plus-sized phone has just torn a hole through the pocket of your favorite jeans.

This is one of several scenarios that play through consumers minds as they contemplate purchasing Apple’s latest gadget, the iPhone 6 Plus.

A little over six  months ago, the software company known as Apple surprised many of its fans when it unveiled the next generation of iPhones, which consisted of the iPhone 6 and a slightly larger version called the iPhone 6 Plus. Since the phones’ initial launch, many consumers have been undecided on which device to upgrade to next.

One factor that goes into choosing which iPhone to upgrade to is the price. A basic 16gb iPhone 6 starts at a price of $199 whereas a 16gb iPhone 6 Plus starts at $299—a $100 difference between the two phones. “It came down to the price for me,” said Johnson State College student Ellen Johnson, an iPhone 6 owner. “ It didn’t make sense to me to pay more for a bigger screen. If you’re going to spend that much money on a phone with that big of a screen, you might as well just buy a tablet.”

The phone is 6.22 inches long, 3.06 inches wide and 0.28 inches thin—which is thinner than the size of a pencil—making it one of the thinnest and lightest iPhones to date. While it is light, it is remarkably larger than the iPhone 6, and even more so of the iPhone 5C. Coming in at 5.44 inches, the 6 Plus is almost three quarters of an inch taller than the 6, and about 1.3 inches taller than the previous generation of iPhones.

“I like the size,” said JSC student and iPhone 6 Plus owner Julian Cunningham. “When it first came out I heard a lot of speculation that it might be hard to use, but having bigger hands I’ve found it easy to use. However, I do find it hard to text with one hand. To safely type on it I have to use two hands.” The 6 Plus is also the first iPhone to have a 1920x 1080p screen resolution. The older generations have a 1334x 750p screen resolution or lower. “It’s really good for watching videos,” said Cunningham.

iPhone 6 Plus owners found out soon after its release that phone designers might have finally reached a limit on how thin a phone can be. Buyers who used the phone without a sturdy case began to find that their phones were bending. As a play on the watergate scandal, this phenomenon has been dubbed “bendgate.”

“The only thing I dislike about it is that the outside is made of aluminum,” said Cunningham. “They’re trying to make things thinner and lighter, and by doing this they’re making the phones less durable and they break easier.”

Over the past six  months there have only been a handful of people that have reported their iPhones being bent. Apple has also reportedly repaired these bent phones for those customers. “I saw a lot of things about being able to bend the phone, but you can do that with a lot of today’s technology like most laptops,” Cunningham said, “I personally haven’t been able to bend my phone in the time that I’ve had it”.

Bending is not the only concern for consumers, however.

“Jeans nowadays,” said Johnson, “at least for females, aren’t big enough for my old iPhone 5s. I felt like if I moved the wrong way it was going to topple out. Therefore doing that with my 6 is just silly looking and takes away the convenience of having a smart phone. I either have to hold it or hope I have a jacket with big enough pockets. To have a phone as big as the iPhone 6 plus would simply be inconvenient to carry around, I would constantly be trying to figure out where I could put it.”

Since the biggest and most relevant concerns for the largest variety of consumers revolves around its size, the iPhone 6 Plus is just as subjectively based as any other phone. “I like it a lot,” said Cunningham. “I was worried about it being too big, it only seems ridiculous to other people—but I like it. I have a bigger hand so its easier for me to use whereas people with smaller hands would be more likely to complain about the size.”
