Badgers edge Eagles with 4-2 win

Johnson State College women’s soccer won its third game in a row with a 4-2 win against North Atlantic Conference (NAC) foe Green Mountain College on Sat. Sept. 21.

Johnson now stands at 4-2 overall, 1-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) while Green Mountain dips to 3-4 overall and 0-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC).

Senior Chelsea Hostetter paced the Badgers with two goals, one in each half respectively. The balanced Badgers attack saw goals from Freshman Maddison Prescott and Senior Kyleigh Joseph. Badgers Kyleigh Joseph, Shannon Grier and Alexa Jakiela also chipped in assists to the well balanced offensive attack.

The Eagles received second half tallies from Freshman Forward Lauren Nesshoever and Sophomore Allison Wadsworth at the 59:23 and 80:16 time marks respectively.

Hostetter put the Badgers on the board 12 minutes into the first half, heading the ball into the net off of a corner kick from teammate Kyleigh Joseph, which gave the Badgers an early edge. Prescott increased the Badgers advantage to 2-0 with about five minutes left in the first half after blasting a shot past Eagles keeper Amber Heath into the upper 90 of the net. The Badgers took a 2-0 lead into halftime and never looked back.

Johnson kept the momentum rolling into the beginning minutes of the second half as Kyleigh Joseph scored unassisted on a floater over the head of Eagles keeper Heath, to give the Badgers a 3-0 lead. However, five minutes later the Eagles answered with a goal of their own off of a corner kick by Allison Wadsworth. The Badgers didn’t wait long to fire back as Chelsea Hostetter scored her second goal of the afternoon after receiving a low cross from teammate Alexa Jakiela. This summed up the scoring for the Badgers on the day as they took a 4-1 advantage. Although, Green Mountain kept fighting and in the 80 minute scored their second goal of the day inching closer to the Badgers as Lauren Nesshoever scored unassisted after beating a Johnson defender one-on-one to the goal and shooting it past Badgers keeper Amber McCullock. This was the last score of the day as the game ended with the Badgers on top 4-2.

The Badgers’ outshot the Eagles 16-10. Johnson took six corner kicks to Green Mountain’s two.

Johnson junior Amber McCullock made five saves for to protect Johnson’s win and earned the victory while Heath made 6 stops in net for Green Mountain in the loss.
