Badgers stymied by Eagles

Johnson State College men’s soccer continues its skid with a 1-0 loss against North Atlantic Conference (NAC) foe Green Mountain College on Sat. Sept. 21. 

Johnson now stands at 0-6 overall, 0-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) while Green Mountain improves to 2-4 overall, 1-0 North Atlantic Conference (NAC).

The Badgers never recovered after Eagles Senior Forward Chukwuemeka Ugorji scored on a cross from teammate Evan Taylor ten minutes into the first half. Badgers Senior Goalkeeper Ryan Beleninitially blocked the scoring threat, but Ugorji finished the score after beating Belen to the ball in contested tussle around the mouth of the net. Belen and the Badgers held the Eagles scoreless the rest of the half. The Badgers were unable to match the opposition’s lone goal of the half despite pelting eleven shots on net to only three by Green Mountain.

Johnson kept the Eagles at bay for the entire second half. However, Johnson, despite out shooting the Eagles 26 to 8 just couldn’t find an equalizer to the early strike by the Eagles. The Badgers came close to tying the match with a minute remaining but Eagles Goalkeeper Nate Laymon turned the scoring threat away earning the shutout for the visiting Eagles.

The Badgers’ outpaced the Eagles in most offensive categories including, attempting ten corner kicks to the Eagles one.  

Johnson Senior Ryan Belen made one save in the loss while Nate Laymon made 6 stops in net for Green Mountain in the win and the shutout.
