The Johnson State women’s basketball team fell to visiting Nichols College 74-61 on Saturday afternoon in Carter Gymnasium.

The Badgers slide to 0-3 on the season while the Bison advance to 2-0 overall.

Senior Kirsten Rand notched 16 points and pulled down eight rebounds while sophomore Sarah Voorhis had a double-double putting up 15 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Sophomore Kasey DeGreenia contributed 10 points in the Badgers’ home opener.

Amber Litwinko lit up the board with a team high 27 points while Sarah Whitestone contributed 16 points. Alexis Wegrzynek and Jessica Kelliher both notched 12 points apiece in the Bison’s winning effort.

Johnson State got off to a fast paced start in the first half and went back and forth with Nichols creating 8 lead changes. At one point Johnson State led by 5 points, but a couple of jump shots gave Nichols the lead. With 7:30 remaining in the first half, Johnson’s shooting went cold allowing Nichols to go on a 14-4 run to close out the half 34-23.

Brittany Robertson opened up the second half with a three-pointer for Johnson, but was answered back with a jump shot from Nichols Litwinko. Nichols would have a lead as big as 19 in the second half, but Johnson cut it down to as little as six by a 10-4 run with three minutes remaining. Nichols would eventually pull away in the final minutes by free throws to walk off with the 74-61 victory.
