A spectacular season for JSC women’s tennis

The women’s tennis team at Johnson has done spectacularly this season. For the first time under their head coach, Michele Whitmore, they had a winning record in the season, winning nine and losing five.

The women started the season off on fire, winning the first three meets in a row. The first was at home against Castleton, which they won 6-3. The next was held at Green Mountain and they ran away with the meet finishing at 8-1. The following was against Lyndon at home and, once again, they controlled the entire meet, ending it at 9-0. They picked up their first loss of the season and their first conference loss at Colby-Sawyer, 9-0.

Overall, their record in the conference was 4-2, which, like their season record, was positive.
The women did go on to lose in the semi-final of 2016 NEAC East Division Women’s Tennis Championship Tournament, which was held at the Castleton tennis courts, 6-3 against Husson. Colby-Sawyer ended up taking the trophy home.

The women should definitely keep their heads up, as this season shows that the Johnson women tennis team has great potential to go on and even win the championship next year or the following year.

One athlete in particular did a marvelous job: Jana Somero was included in the All-Tournament Team. Only the best of the best get put on this team, so it’s a great honor, not only for Somero but also for Johnson, to have a player on the team.

Last season, the Johnson Badgers ended up 6-7 in their season and 2-11 in the previous season.
The future holds great promise for the women’s tennis team, and their fans wait patiently for the next season to see if they continue the hot streak they began this season.
