Johnson State College sophomore Austin Walters (Grantham, N.H.) has been selected as the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Men’s Golf Rookie of the Year.

 
Walters has had a notable rookie campaign for the Badgers. At the 2016 NAC Championship, he recorded a 76 on Day 1 and a 79 on Day 2 for a two-day total of 155, which tied him for 12th. The Grantham, N.H., native was tied with another rookie and had to compete for the Rookie of the Year title in a sudden death play-off starting on the first hole. Walters only needed one hole to claim the honor as he sunk his third shot. Throughout the fall, the rookie competed in four events for Johnson State, including two top-15 performances, as he placed 12th (83) at the Paul Smith’s Invitational and tied for 15th (84) at the JSC Invitational. Walters was selected NAC Rookie of the Week once this season.

 
The Badgers also had an All-Conference selection, with sophomore Kiley Moody (Wolcott, Vt.) being named to the Second Team All-Conference, as well as the NAC Sportsmanship Team.
Johnson State finished sixth at the NAC Championship over the weekend.

 

The Johnson State College volleyball team split a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) tri-match on Saturday, Oct. 22, falling to Castleton 3-0 and defeating Green Mountain 3-0.
The Badgers finish their season with an overall record of 3-20 and 1-6 in the conference.

 

 

MATCH 1 vs. CASTLETON
A late run by Castleton gave the Spartans a 25-21 first set win. The second set was close as well, with Castleton pulling away late once again to win 25-20. Johnson was unable to force a fourth frame, losing another close set 25-20.

 

 

STATS LEADERS
The Badgers were led by a match-high 12 kills from Breanna Laughlin (San Jacinto, Calif.) who also collected a team-high 13 digs. Kimberly Reville (Burke, N.Y.) supported the offense with seven kills and notched 12 digs defensively and three service aces. Anna Bingham (Island Pond, Vt.) steered the offense with 19 assists and also contributed with eight digs.

 

 

MATCH 2 vs. GREEN MOUNTAIN
Johnson went down early in the first set, but came from behind to take the 25-18 win. The Badgers had to come from behind once more in the second, but were able to edge Green Mountain 25-22. The Eagles jumped out to another early lead in the third, but were unable to hold the Badgers off, leading to a 25-17 Johnson win.

 

 

STATS LEADERS
Laughlin led the Badgers again with a match-high 12 kills to go along with 17 digs. Reville added five kills and six digs for the Badgers, while Bingham once again paced the Badgers with 17 assists.

 

The Johnson State College men’s soccer team fell to Castleton University 7-1 in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) match on Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 18, at Minaert Field.
The Badgers drop to 2-12 overall and 1-7 in the NAC. Castleton moves to 5-8-2 on the year and 5-2 in conference play.

 

 

SCORING
First Half: Castleton scored two goals in the early portion of the first half. Jack Kingdon and Fidele Rutayisire were the Spartan goal scorers. Dominic Caforia (Waterbury, Vt.) cut the lead in half at the 14-minute mark when Patrick Miller (Webster, N.Y.) sent the ball into the box to Caforia, who headed it over the Castleton keeper. Seth Wilmott pushed the Spartan lead back to two on a goal in the 43rd minute to send Castleton into the half with a 3-1 lead.

 
Second Half: The Spartans scattered four goals throughout the second half, with Kingdon scoring twice and Josh Mathews and Andrew Meister netting one each.

 

 

GOALKEEPERS
Gerrit Lane (Moretown, Vt.) stopped five of seven shots on goal in the loss for Johnson. Aaron Parker allowed one goal and earned the win.

 

The Johnson State College men’s soccer team fell to North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opponent, Lyndon State College 7-3 on Saturday afternoon, Oct. 22. With the loss, Johnson finishes their season (2-12-0, 1-7-0) and Lyndon improves to (5-7-1, 2-6-0).

 

 

SCORING
First Half: Lyndon opened the game by scoring just three minutes into the half with a goal from Devin Cowan. Cowan would go on to score again, as well as Hunter Torrey and Nat Kolash, to make it 4-0 in Lyndon’s favor going into halftime.

 
Second Half: Johnson’s Corey Nystrom (Brookline, Vt.) got the Badgers on the board with a goal in the 55th minute, assisted by John Folsom (Califon, N.J.). Lyndon would answer with three more goals. The Badgers managed to get two more goals in the final 14 minutes from Connor Neathawk (Bellows Falls, Vt.) and Nystrom, but the late run was too little too late as Lyndon came away with the 7-3 victory

 

 

GOALKEEPERS
Garrit Lane (Moretown, Vt.) was tabbed with the loss, stopping nine of 16 shots on goal, while Lyndon’s Matt LaClair picked up the win stopping three out of Johnson’s four shots on goal. Also in goal for Lyndon was Caleb Derbyshire, who stopped three out of five Johnson shots.
