Men’s lacrosse loses in opener to Salem State

SALEM, MASS. – The Johnson State College men’s lacrosse team fell to Salem State College 21-1 in their season opener Saturday afternoon at Alumni Field.

The Badgers slide to 0-1 on the season while the Vikings move to 1-2.

1st Quarter

The Vikings took an 8-0 lead after one with two goals each from Charlie Bourgeois and Hunter Spencer.

2nd Quarter

Salem added 9 more goals in the second quarter to give the Vikings a 17-0 lead at the half. Dan Xu tallied three goals and added an assist in the quarter.

3rd Quarter

Johnson got on the board early in the third with an unassisted goal from Kyle Picard (Hyde Park, Vt.). Salem would add three goals in the quarter to make it 20-1 going into the fourth.

4th Quarter

The Badgers held the Vikings to one goal in fourth making the final score 21-1 in the host’s favor.

Goalkeepers

Chris Schaub earned the win for Salem, not facing a single shot from Johnson. Connor O’Melia gave up the lone Badger goal while saving the only other shot he faced. Patrick Bell (Charlestown, R.I.) took the loss for Johnson, stopping eight of the 29 shots he faced.

Stats Breakdown

The Vikings recorded 29 shots on goal to Johnson’s two and earned a 23-2 edge in face offs. Salem held a 39-9 advantage in ground balls while the Badgers turned over the ball 29 times to the Vikings 30.

 

Softball loses to Eastern Univeristy, comes from behind to beat Alverno to split doubleheader

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Johnson State College softball team fell to fell to Eastern University (4-1) and defeated Alverno (3-5) in their fourth day of THE Spring Games in Clermont, Florida.

GAME 1: EASTERN 8, Johnson 0

The Eagles spread their eight runs over all five innings, shutting out the Badgers on route to the 8-0 victory.

Pitching

Meagan Quinn got the one-hit shutout win for Eastern, while Kaitlynn Woodward (White River, Vt.) was given the loss, allowing seven earned runs on 12 hits.

GAME 2: ALVERNO 6, JOHNSON 8

After a scoreless first, the Badgers jumped out to the early 2-0 lead when Lindsey Laperle (Bethel, Vt.) and Mikaela Magnant (Franklin, Vt.) each drove in a run. The Inferno cut the lead in half in the bottom of the inning, and then took the lead with four runs in the bottom of the third. The teams traded scores in the fourth, with Johnson’s run coming off an RBI double by Kasie Craig (Windham, Maine). The Badgers got within one in the fifth, with Woodward hitting an RBI triple then scoring on a Laperle groundout. After a scoreless sixth, the Badgers took back the lead on a bases-loaded triple by Nicole Mooney (Hillsborough, N.H.) down the right field line to make it 8-6. After getting two quick outs, the Inferno threatened with runners on first and second. Woodward was able to force a groundout, however, to preserve the 8-6 victory.

Pitching

Woodward (1-5) earned the win after throwing three scoreless innings in relief of Magnant, who allowed six runs on 10 hits in four innings of work. Lauren Greif (0-1) got the loss, allowing six runs on six hits.

Men’s lacrosse loses to Dean College on the second day of back-to-back

FRANKLIN, Mass. – The Johnson State College men’s lacrosse team dropped a 16-1 non-conference contest to Dean College on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.
The Badgers drop to 0-2 on the season while the Bulldogs improve to 2-1.

1st Quarter

Dean took a 7-0 lead in the first as Brody Fredericks scored two goals and assisted on another. Colin Hinrichs assisted on three goals while also scoring one of his own.

2nd Quarter

The Bulldogs added three more goals in the second, the last being scored with just :06 seconds left in the half to give Dean a 10-0 lead going into the intermission.

3rd Quarter

Johnson held The Bulldogs to just one goal, keeping them scoreless for the first eight minutes of the quarter.

4th Quarter

The Badgers started off the fourth with an unassisted goal from Ethan Wehse (Stowe, Vt.) with 9:39 left in regulation. Johnson was unable to stop the Dean attack, giving up five more goals to make the final score 16-1.

Goalkeepers

Madison Olsen earned the win for the Bulldogs without facing a shot from the Badger attack. Dilon Poignant played most of the second half in goal for Dean, stopping five shots and allowing the lone Johnson goal. Patrick Bell (Charlestown, R.I.) recorded the loss for Johnson, stopping nine of the 25 shots he faced.

Stats Breakdown

The Bulldogs had 25 shots on goal to Johnson’s six and earned a 30-12 edge in face offs. Dean turned over the ball 16 times compared to the Badgers 21.

Next Up

Johnson will travel to Thomas College on Saturday the 17th for their North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opener slated to tip-off 2:00 p.m.
