Men’s tennis loses in opener to Castleton

STOWE, Vt. – The Johnson State College men’s tennis team fell to Castleton University 0-0 in their season opener on Saturday at Topnotch Resort.

Doubles
The Spartans took all three doubles matches to take a 3-0 lead. The team of Quentin Barthe and Jared Wheelers took first doubles 8-1 over Gerrit Lane (Moretown, Vt.) and Austin Walters (Grantham N.H.). Trevor Hanna and Brody Wagner earned an 8-0 second doubles win over John Folsom (Califon, N.J.) and Ethan Hutchinson (Canterbury, N.H.), while Evan Daigneault (Newfane, Vt.) and Quinn Lambert (Joppatowne, Md.) lost third flight doubles 8-4 to Tripp Norris and Ethan Cameron-Vaupel.

Singles
Castleton swept singles to take the 9-0 victory. In first flight, Lane took an early lead in the first set but could not finish Barthe off and dropped the set 7-5. Barthe took the 6-1 win in the second set to grab the point for Castleton. Wheeler took down Walters in second singles 6-0. 6-1, while Folsom fell to Hanna in straight 6-0 sets in third flight.

Hutchinson took two points in the first set of fourth singles, but Wagner went on to take the 6-2, 6-0 victory. Norris took straight 6-0 sets over Daigneault in fifth singles, while Cameron-Vaupel to take a 3-6, 6-2, 10-7 win over Lambert.

 

Female student-athlete spotlight: Kaitlyn Woodward

This week’s female student-athlete spotlight is softball junior Kaitlynn Woodward.

Woodward and her team played 12 games last week in Florida, nine of which she pitched in. Woodward’s highlights for the Florida trip include her first win versus Alverno College, a game in which she pitched three scoreless innings and gave up only one hit. For the trip, Woodward stuck-out 12 batters on 32.2 innings pitched. Offensively Woodward recorded seven hits on 25 at-bats, and scored five runs.

The Badgers will host Middlebury on Saturday the 31st for a double-header slated to start at 1:00 p.m.

 

Men’s tennis loses in a close one to Fort Kent

SAINT ALBANS, Vt. – The Johnson State College men’s tennis team fell to University of Maine at Fort Kent 5-4 on Sunday afternoon at Collins-Perley Sports Complex.

Doubles
Johnson took two out of the three doubles matches to start off. The duo of Gerrit Lane (Moretown, Vt.) and Joseph Holloway (London, England) won first doubles 8-6. The team of John Folsom (Califon, N.J.) and Quinn Lambert (Canterbury, N.H.) won second doubles 8-7. The third doubles flight were won by UMFK 8-1 against the Johnson-pair of Colin Compagna (Morrisville, Vt.) and Dawda Jallow (Allen, Tx.).

Singles
Lane won the first flight of singles 6-1, 6-0. Holloway dropped the second flight singles 6-1, 6-1 while Folsom also dropped his third flight in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.

Lambert took his fourth flight to a super tiebreaker and won 6-1,4-6, 10-8. Compagna dropped fifth flight in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, while Jallow dropped the last flight of singles 6-0,6-0.
