Castleton takes doubleheader sweep over Johnson

JOHNSON, Vt. – The Johnson State College softball team split a doubleheader with Lyndon State College, winning 11-0 and falling 8-6 in extra innings on Saturday afternoon at Minaert Field.

Game 1: Johnson 11, Lyndon 0.
Johnson got on the board early, scoring six in the first inning. Nicole Mooney (Hillsborough, N.H.), Savannnah Dufresne (Swanton, Vt.) and Sabrina Roberge (Irasburg, Vt.) all recorded base hits in the inning. The Badgers added one more run in the second with a RBI double from Emily Marshall (Malone, N.Y.). Johnson scored four times in the third, starting with a bases-loaded Marshall walk to plate one, and then a bases clearing single from Lindsey LaPerle (Bethel, Vt.) that gave the Badgers an 11-0 lead. Lyndon failed to score so Johnson earned the 11-0 victory after five innings.

Pitching
Woodward earned the shutout win, allowing no runs on three hits and one walk while striking out four in five innings of work. Kiya Dewitt got the loss, allowing 11 runs, 10 of which were earned, on nine hits, seven walks, and one strikeout.

Game 2: Lyndon 8, Johnson 6.
Lyndon took an early 3-0 lead in the first with help from an error and a passed ball from the home team. The Hornets lead off the second with a 2 RBI double from Kiya DeWitt. Lyndon would score on a fielding error and take a 6-0 lead headingin into the bottom of the second.

Johnson got on the board with a 2 RBI single from Annika Dyhrberg (Falmouth, Maine). The Badgers scored again in the inning with a Nicole Mooney (Hillsborough, N.H.) single that plated Dyhrberg.

Both teams remained scoreless until Johnson plated a run in the bottom of the fifth off of a Kasey Craig (Windam, Maine) RBI sacrifice groundout. The Badgers would score twice more to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh inning to send it to extras. Both Emily Marshall (Malone, N.Y.) and Lindsey LaPerle (Bethel, Vt.) scored in the inning.

Lyndon plated two runs in the top of the eight on an RBI sac groundout and an RBI double. Johnson was unable to answer, giving Lyndon its first win of the season by a score of 8-6.

Pitching
Mikaela Magnant (Franklin, Vt.) had a no-decision giving up six runs, five of which were earned, on six hits in two innings of work. Kaitlynn Woodward took the loss after six innings on the mound. She gave up one run on two hits and struck-out four. Amber Roberts picked up her first win of the season with a six run, seven hit, five strikeout performance in eight innings of work.

Senior Celebration
Prior to game-start, Johnson celebrated its four seniors: Kasey Craig, Abby McRae, Sabrina Roberge, and Kaitlynn Woodward. Johnson also thank Coach Robert Gervais who is stepping down after the completion of this season.
