Women’s basketball drops conference game to Mariners

The Northern Vermont University-Johnson women’s basketball team faced off in their second conference game of the weekend. Maine Maritime Academy pulled away by a score of 66-27.

The Badgers were led by Maraiah Ramos (Lebanon, NH) who scored a team high 15 points and nine rebounds. Kaitlyn Brouard (Milton,Vt.) added eight points and three rebounds for the Baders.

The Mariners made a strong effort in the first quarter that allowed them to begin the contest off strong. After the initial basket by the Mariners, Lindsey LaPerle (Bethel Vt.) made a shot of her own from behind the arc tieing the game at three. The Mariners locked down on the defensive end and pushed the lead to 14-3 before the Badgers connected on another attempt. After the first quarter the Badgers trailed 16-5. The Mariners opened the second quarter on an 11-0 run before Ramos connected on a layup and three point attempt for the Badgers.

Headed into the break the Badgers trailed 33-13. The Third quarter started with a 5-0 Mariners run until Amorette Rodriquez (Downey, CA) attacked the basket and was fouled. Rodriquez sank one of two free throws for the Badgers first point of the second half. The Badgrs kept chiping away but the Mariners were too strong as they transitioned on the break earning baskets late in the third quarter to take a lead of 44-21 headed into the final stint of action.

The Badgers were held to only six points in the final quarter of the game and eventually fell to the Mariners 66-27. The Badgers won the turnover battle as they turned the Mariners over 22 times while only giving the ball back 16 times.
