Men’s tennis captures first win of season

The Northern Vermont University-Johnson men’s tennis team edged Northern Vermont University-Lyndon by the smallest of margins winning their first match of the season by a score of 5-4.

Three doubles matches started play off on Wednesday evening. The Badgers No. 1 doubles team of Austin Walters and John Folsom faced off against the Hornets Neal Mulligan and Patrick Wickstrom. The Hornets were victorious winning by a score of 8-2. The Badgers bounced back, finishing out doubles action winning the next two matches. In No. 2 doubles Trevor Newton and Kenneth Chandler controlled the match and beat Kyle Leighton and Mukhtar Sheikh Abdullahi by a score of 8-4. Led by senior Donell Shaw, the Badgers No. 3 doubles closed out doubles action winning the match over Jeremy Polonia and Abukar Hassan by a score of 8-2.

After controlling most of doubles action, the Hornets came out strong in the opening rounds of singles play. Walters represented the Badgers in No. 1 singles but was beat by Storm. Mulligan kept the streak going as he capitalized and won his singles match over Folsom by a score of 6-2, 6-1. In No. 3 singles the Badgers earned their first singles match as Newton won his match by a score of 6-3, 6-1 over Abdullahi. The Hornets tied the match up at 4-4 after Garrison French fell in No.6 singles. Shaw carried the group in the No.5 singles spot as he captured the final victory of the evening wining the pro set to earn the Badgers their first win of the season.
