VSC board to visit campus Feb. 12-13

The Vermont State Colleges board of trustees will visit the JSC campus on Friday, Feb. 12 and Saturday Feb. 13.

On Friday, the board will tour the college, receive an update on college programs, and attend a student/alumni panel with a Q&A to follow.

Later in the afteroon the board will tour a student poster presentation in Bentley before having dinner in the Stearns Performance Space.

On Saturday, it will hold is regular meeting, this month in Stearns Performance Space, and will vote on a forwarded recommendation from the Finance and Facilities committee to reconsider the board’s earlier dcecision to freeze tuition for the 2016 -2017 academic year as an incentive for recruiting students.

In light of the governor’s proposal to level-fund the VSC in the next budget and other considerations, VSC Chancellor Jeb Spauling had requested the board reconsider that tuition decision.

With enrollment numbers continuing to decline and declining financial support from the state, Vermont’s public colleges are increasingly reliant on tution for operating revenues.

The Vermont state colleges rely on tuition for approximately 84.5 percent of their operating revenues, which places Vermont at the bottomnationally in terms of state support for higher education.
